Ronald Smith has been a leader in music and education for his entire career. He began as a teacher and director in independent schools and then was appointed a County Music Advisor. From there he became Inspector of Schools for Bristol, England and then Senior Music Advisor for the County of Avon. In 1983 Ronald Smith was appointed the Chief Executive and Director of Examinations of the Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music. He has held a number of important administrative positions in his country including President of the Incorporated Society of Musicians and President of the Royal Philharmonic Society. He was the Organizing Chairman of the 1982 ISME Conference and then a Vice-President and Secretary General for eight years. Throughout his career he has been recognized as a devoted champion of music in all levels of education, and, as such, has been respected both in his own country and internationally. We have been privileged to call him a colleague and friend.
