Patrick Schmidt is chair of music education at University of Western Ontario, Canada. He served as Associate Professor of Music Education and Associate Director of Florida International University’s School of Music in Miami, Florida from 2012 to 2015 and at the Westminster Choir College in Princeton, NJ from 2001 to 2012. Schmidt serves on the editorial boards of the Journal of the Council of Research in Music Education, Arts Education Policy Review, the ABEM Journal, the Finnish Journal of Music Education, and the Revista Internacional de Educacíon Musical sponsored by ISME. His innovative work in policy, critical pedagogy, urban music education and policy studies is recognized nationally and internationally. Beyond his ongoing research projects, Schmidt has led several consulting and evaluative projects including recent work for the National YoungArts Foundation, and the New World Symphony in the United States, as well as for the Ministry of Culture and Education in Chile. Schmidt co-edited the newly released Oxford Handbook of Music Education and Social Justice, alongside Cathy Benedict, Gary Spruce, and Paul Woodford, also at Western. His book "Policy and the Political Life of Music Education" co-edited with Richard Colwell will be released by Oxford University Press in 2017. Schmidt is a past chair of the Policy Commission.
