Richard Hallam MBE has been a professional musician, teacher, curriculum advisor, inspector, head of music service, conductor, researcher and government adviser for music education in England. He has been Chair of NAME; President of the ISM, and chair of the ISME’s Sistema Special Interest Group. Richard chaired the Music Manifesto steering committee in his capacity as Government adviser from 2003 to 2011 becoming the National Music Participation Director in 2008 and acting as the Department for Education’s consultant for the National Plan for Music Education to 2012. In November 2012 he received the Music Teacher of the Year Lifetime Achievement Award. He is currently Chair of the Music Education Council (UK) and a trustee of several music education related charities. Richard has undertaken music education research throughout this period, including presenting at international conferences including ISME as well as many music education conferences in the UK.
