On a personal level I have been involved with educational technology for over 30 years but specifically in the music education space for well over 20 years. I have alway seen the potential for technology to support good teaching and learning and not supplant. I frimly believe in the transformative effect of music

I set up Charanga in 1996 with long time friend Mark Burke of the Royal College of Music and toegther since then we have been a pioneering force leading Charanga to its place as an award-winning international go to partner for using technology in music eucation.

Charanga

Over 45,000 teachers in more than 60 countries use Charanga’sonline platform to help them teach music – that’s over 2.5 million children enjoying Charanga-supported music lessons every week. 60% of all English primary schools have adopted our respected Musical School programme, but we’re much more than a supplier of award-winning resources and training programmes. As well as the projects listed below, we’ve had notable success and impact in the Middle East, Spain and Malaysia. New partnerships are underway globally.

Charanga in Denmark

Free-to-access and managed by the DEOO, the charanga.dk platform gives individual teachers, a single school or an entire Kommune access to great music, modern pedagogy and the very best digital teaching and learning materials in Danish. While supporting children’s music education across Denmark, the project seeks to bring together different providers of children’s music learning at scale; those who work largely in isolation from each other currently.

Charanga in the Czech Republic
The Erasmus MECLA (Music Education Cultural Learning Alliance) project has led to us working with music leaders from Náchod in the Czech Republic. Our platform will initially support the work of Music Schools and Public Elementary School teachers, enriching what they do best day-to-day, and more. A new suite of resources aimed at teaching children the foundations of musical understanding is now available.

Charanga in Australia
Few primary schools in Australia have a music specialist, are teaching a music curriculum or offer instrumental teaching. To address this, we’re working with the South Australia Department for Education’s Instrumental Music team to offer training and a certified Professional Learning Program to classroom teachers. We’ve launched Charanga Australia and are offering teachers 2 years fully funded access to our award-winning primary music programme to help them to feel better equipped to teach music.

Charanga in Southeast Asia
We began working with Musical Futures International in 2019 to support and extend the skills of classroom and instrumental teachers in Southeast Asia. We started with a 2-day conference at the British School Manila in the Philippines. The ongoing programme comprises practical workshops for primary, secondary and tertiary music educators, and sessions for non-specialist primary teachers.

Supporting teachers

In today’s situation, Charanga facilitates exactly the kind of approaches that music hubs, schools and children require. Infinitely customisable, our platform comprehensively supports a blended learning approach. Ready-made packages for home learning are provided. Our state-of-the-art CPD and Training facilities provide webinar support for teachers and help them to build up an online CPD portfolio.

Health and wellbeing is supported by an extensive song bank and interactive resource library.
