The Society

The International Society for Music Education was formed at a conference convened by UNESCO in 1953 'to stimulate music education as an integral part of general education'. This has been ISME's main concern over the past decades and continues to be our most important source of motivation. In the years that followed its formation, ISME gradually evolved to what it is today: a worldwide service platform for music educators who want their profession to be taken seriously by educators in other disciplines, by politicians and policy makers, by international organisations that promote culture, education, conservation and durable development of cultural heritage.

  Governance :

General Assembly

The General Assembly is the most important and powerful body in the Society. It sets out, controls and approves the policy of the Society, it appoints the President and members of the Board and controls its actions. The General Assembly convenes every two years during the biennial International ISME Music Education Conference.

Board and Board Member Profiles

The ISME Board consists of 15 women and men who during the two years of their appointment dedicate much of their professional and private time to executing the Society's policy as determined by the General Assembly. They represent as many aspects of music education and as many cultural and ethnic groups as possible. Three of them occupy special positions on the Executive in order to create continuity for the Society. They are the President (Liane Hentschke), President Elect (Håkan Lundström) and Past President (Gary McPherson). By reasons of their position and experience, they are well qualified to develop the course of the Society as set by the General Assembly. Biographies and contact details for the board members are available here. The ISME Board meets once every year at the location where the (next) international ISME music education conference is scheduled to take place.

Executive Committee

Because of the practical difficulties in directly involving all Board members in the daily administration of the Society, a smaller Executive Committee is in place to realise the decisions taken by the General Assembly. The Executive Committee consists of the President, the President Elect, the Past President and two regular Board members. They are in regular communication with each other and with the International Office. The Executive Committee works from a strategic plan and convenes two to three times every year.

ISME Constitution and Bylaws

As a Society ISME has a Constitution and Bylaws which govern the functioning of the external and internal activities of the Society. The Constitution can only be amended and changed through a decision taken by the General Assembly. Bylaws, too, are the responsibility of the General Assembly.

ISME National Affiliates (INAs)

In order to maintain contacts with members on a local and personal basis and to sustain the work ISME is engaged in worldwide, ISME National Affiliates (INAs) have been created, many of whom have a history that is as old as ISME itself. They often represent their national body of music educators and therefore are important pillars to lean on for the international organisation. All INAs must be ISME Group Members.

ISME Reporters

In countries where ISME does not have a local organisation as a representative of the Society, there are Reporters who liaise with the Society and the International Office.

International Office

The International Office co-ordinates all communication related to the work of ISME. It is the location where the administration of the Society is based, where the membership applications are received and processed, where the Newsletter is put together and circulated (both electronically and in hard copy), where the International Journal of Music Education is published, the web site updated, the international music education projects are co-ordinated. The International Office maintains contacts with ISME members, with national and international organisations and with partners from the music industry, among whom are advertisers, service providers, sponsors and other relevant bodies.
