CITY TOUR (July 17, Rome)
PIAZZA S. PIETRO (Saint Peter's Square)
On the grave of San Peter, martyrised in 64 A. C., Costantino erected a temple
which Pope Giulio II replaced with the construction of a new basilica in 1506. From
then, it was the beginning of a long phase of projects and creations which
lasted for 120 years under many Popes and with the contribution of different
artists, the so-called Fabbrica di San Pietro. The Square, realised by Bernini
between 1656 and 1667, is encircled by an imposing colonnade supporting the
statues of the Saints.
CASTEL SANT'ANGELO (Saint
Angel's Castle)
Crossing Via della Conciliazione - a street realised after Patti Lateranensi
were agreed upon in 1930 - and turning into Lungotevere Castello, you arrive at
Saint Angel's Castle, formerly the Mausoleum of Adriano. The Castle took
its name from Arcangelo Michele represented on the top of the Castle through a
bronze statue (XVIII century).
PIAZZA NAVONA (Navona Square)
Crossing the Bridge of Saint Angel and the wonderful Coronari Street,
you reach Navona Square, the most beautiful among the baroque-style squares in
Rome. The square was raised around the second half of XVII century over
an ancient Roman circus, the stadium of Domiziano, from which the square
inherited its structure. Within the square, there are Saint Agnese's Church of
Borromini and the fountain of Quattro Fiumi sculpted by Bernini.
