On behalf of the 29th ISME World Conference Organizing Group and two hosts: China Conservatory of Music (CCM) and Chinese Society for Music Education (CSME), I would like to extend my sincerely invitation to all of you to the 29th ISME World Conference, which will be held in Beijing, China from August 2 to 6, 2010.

China is an ancient civilization nation with its more than 8,000 yearsÕ music history. The glamorous, beautiful and splendid Chinese music belongs to Chinese people as well as you from all over the world. We have a long tradition of sharing and exchanging our music and culture to our friends from world wide nations.

The hosts of 2010 ISME World Conference, China Conservatory of Music and Chinese Society for Music Education are two most important institutions for carrying on, promoting and spreading traditional Chinese music. We have been bending ourselves to bring higher development of traditional Chinese music and introduce it to abroad.

China Conservatory of Music is the only higher education institution with a focus of traditional Chinese music education and research, which was established under the late Prime Minister Zhou EnlaiÕs proposal in 1964. The conservatory has contributed much on promoting Chinese culture and cultivated hundreds of national musicians since it was established 44 years ago.

CCM pays much attention to the international music and culture exchange and keeps a close relationship with many higher music education institutions. We have hosted many international music events such as the ÒPresidents Forum of International Music CollegesÓ in 2004, the ÒContemporary New Music Concert from China and FranceÓ in 2004, the ÒInternational Yangqin ConferenceÓ in 2005, the ÒInternational Percussion FestivalÓ in 2006, the ÒInternational Piano and Bass Cello FestivalÓ in 2007, the Ò32nd General Assembly of IMC and the 2nd World Music ForumÓ in 2007, the ÒWorld Female Composer ConferenceÓ in 2008. Also, we collaborated with three Austrian Music Colleges and established ÒChina-Austria Jointed Music CollegeÓ in Beijing last year.

Chinese Society for Music Education is one of the most important and influential academic associations of China, which covers the relevant research fields of music education in all levels. CSME is also an ISME group member and an affiliation of Chinese Education Society. Currently, CSME has more than 3,000 active members and 13 affiliated professional associations. CSME works closely with the Education Ministry of China and many higher music education institutions and has the experiences for organizing many national as well as international music activities.

The 29th ISME World Conference site Beijing is an international capital city. It is also the politics, economy and culture center of China as well as a popular tourist destination. The famous scenery spots such as the Forbidden City, the Temple of Heaven, the Summer Palace and the Great Wall have carried many beautiful and miraculous stories. They attract thousands of tourists from all over the world. The 29th Olympic Games is to be held in Beijing this August, and this old city will become the world focus again. China Conservatory of Music is only a few blocks away from the main gymnasium of Olympic Games, Òthe NestÓ and the National Aquatics Center, Òthe Water Cube.Ó The 29th ISME World Conference venue will be held the National Conference of China, which is just inside the Beijing Olympic Village.

Hosting the 29th ISME World Conference is our honorable and glorious mission. We are always willing to try our best to push a well development of music education of the world and give any possible help to you for exploring Oriental culture as well as Chinese music. Conference Theme:

Harmony and the World Future

Harmony is the most important concept in China and also a fundamental characteristic of Chinese music. It means that the most excellent music must be the one that helps people reach to the peace of mind and then live with nature harmoniously. It is not only the highest praise for music, but also an ideal state in dealing with everything in Chinese people's daily life. Chinese people hope that their family members live in happiness and harmony, and the relationship between people is harmonious. Lately, the Chinese Central Government has proposed to build a harmonious world, and Chinese President Hu Jintao also urged Chinese artists and writers to devote themselves to promoting "cultural harmony".

Based on the conference theme, music educators will discuss how to enhance a well communication and understanding between different nations, cultures, genders and different groups on this conference. They will also discuss how to promote a more harmonious global development with harmonious music.

Conference Logo

This logo indicates triple meanings. The image is a watch-tower shape of the Great Wall, which indicates the conference is to be held in Beijing, China. The logo could be also regarded as a kind of musical instrument, Chinese chime-bells, the most splendid musical instrument of ancient China in 2,400 years ago. The bell handle is carved with a symbol of the transformed treble clef and cloud, which indicates the ISME World Conference is a multicultural event with Eastern and Western music and people from all over the world.

The Logo was designed by the PeopleÕs Music Publishing House of China (team work).

Commission Sessions

The following six cities are recommended by the 2010 COG as the commission sites of the 29th ISME World Conference: Beijing, Shanghai Shenyang, Changchun, Kaifeng and Hangzhou. Each city has at least one higher music education institution that had reached an agreement to the COG for hosting a commission session. Not only these cities play very important roles of ChinaÕs music education field, for example, four of Chinese seven major conservatories are in above cities, but also they are all located not very far from the conference site and have direct flights and express trains to the Beijing everyday. Furthermore, each city represents a local aspect of Chinese culture, which is very important for participants to learn. All organizer institutions have their advantages of subjective focus and research tradition in certain areas.
