Frequently Asked Questions FAQ

Any tips on travel?

Print
Check with your travel agent if you require a visa to enter Italy. Plan well in advance, because applications for visas can be a slow process.

Bologna is hot in summer, and could be humid too. Travel light. Distances to walk in airports can be long, and with increased security at airports, hand luggage can now be very limited. Check with your airline before leaving home what will be allowed in the cabin. You will find that airport regulations do vary from one place to another, so expect differences in rules.

Travel: how do I get there?

Print
It is a pleasure to welcome you to Bologna.

Bologna has an international airport with direct flights from most major cities such as London and Rome. Check with your travel agent on the website for the best connections and prices.

Bologna only has one airport. The code for this airport is BLQ. Other airports serviced by budget airlines are in nearby towns, and therefore the transfers from the airport to the hotel will take much longer and cost more than from the airport IN Bologna.

What about food during the Conference?

Italy is famous for it's food (pizzas, pastas and much more) as well as producers of excellent local wines. Bologna in particular has plenty to offer, so do try some of the many delightful eating houses in the city.

Breakfast is usually included at the hotels (check with your hotel).

Lunch and coffee/tea breaks can be enjoyed at the many local cafes along Via Zamboni and surrounding streets.  Fruit, vegetables, hams and salamis and other specialities can be bought from the delightful local markets or supermarkets off the side streets from Piazza Maggiore.

Evening meals are best shared with friends a making new friends. There are countless delightful restaurants in the area for your evening meals.

Special Tip #1: There is a small restaurant at the top of San Luca , serving pizzas or a la carte- booking ahead is strongly advised!
San Luca:
A wonderful experience is to visit San Luca to enjoy a view of Bologna from above. The easiest way to get there is to take a taxi (share with friends). Ascending the 3.5 km hill there are 666 elegant porticos giving protection from the sun and leading to the Sanctuary of the Madonna of San Luca at a height of 291 metres above Bologna. You can see many people walking or running up or down the porticos at all times of day! The construction of the Portico of San Luca began in 1657 and was financed entirely by donations.

Special Tip #2: A visit to Bologna would not be complete without indulging in the famous Italian ice-creams! The gelati shop we frequented was open until midnight every day!
